Clearer Skin, Visible Renewal

What is BBL?

Broadband Light (BBL) is an advanced form of IPL (intense pulsed light) that uses short bursts of light energy to rejuvenate the skin of adults with hyperpigmentation, redness, or sun damage on their neck, face, and body, as well as vascular conditions in the skin. The light penetrates the surface to stimulate natural healing processes, boost collagen production, and create a more even, vibrant complexion. This process is completely noninvasive and delivers noticeable improvements over a series of treatments.

At the MODERN, we use both Forever Young BBL®, ideal for maintaining youthful skin and treating chronic discoloration, and BBL® Hero™, which is faster and treats larger areas with more even coverage. These technologies can be used on the face, neck, chest, hands, and body.

What Is BBL HERO?

Developed by Sciton, BBL HERO (for High Energy Rapid Output) enhances BBL treatments with a specialized larger handpiece that delivers the following improvements:

4 times the speed

Making it faster to treat large areas. It takes just 2 to 5 minutes to treat the back, arms, or legs.

3 times the power

Increasing the effectiveness of each pulse to reduce the number of passes needed over the skin.

2 times cooler

Making treatments more comfortable.

A Gentle Reset

How Does BBL Work?

BBL uses intense pulses of light energy to rejuvenate the skin without harming its surface by:

  • Heating up the pigment in visible blood vessels, causing the blood vessels to collapse and the body to gradually absorb them.
  • Breaking the excess melanin in brown spots into tiny particles that are sloughed off with skin cells on the surface.
  • Setting off the skin’s natural healing process, which increases collagen production.

As this takes effect, you should begin to see a healthier complexion with an improved tone and decreased redness and brown discoloration.

Even Tone, Bright Results

What Conditions Does BBL Address?

BBL effectively treats a variety of common skin concerns, including:

  • Sun damage and hyperpigmentation
  • Redness and rosacea
  • Broken capillaries
  • Age spots and brown patches
  • Dull or uneven skin tone
  • Fine lines and visible signs of aging
  • Acne and acne-related discoloration

What Areas of the Body Can BBL Treat?

BBL can safely treat the face, neck, chest, shoulders, arms, back, hands, and more. With BBL Hero™, larger body areas are treated faster and more evenly, making full-body skin rejuvenation more efficient than ever.

Healthier Skin, Long-Term

What Are the Benefits of BBL?

BBL offers both immediate and lasting improvements. After a few sessions, treated skin looks brighter, more even, and visibly clearer. Over time, regular BBL treatments—especially with Forever Young BBL—have been shown to slow down signs of aging by supporting skin renewal at the molecular level. Patients love that BBL is fast, comfortable, and fits easily into a modern routine. It’s a perfect fit for those looking to maintain glowing, youthful skin year-round.

Tailored for Your Skin Type

Who Is an Ideal Candidate for BBL?

If dark spots, sun damage, or fine lines are keeping you from having the skin you want, you may be a candidate for BroadBand Light (BBL) or BBL HERO laser skin treatments at our Metairie office in New Orleans, LA. However, it may not be suitable for very deep skin tones or for those with certain medical conditions or photosensitivity. Ideal candidates for a BBL photofacial at our practice may have one or more of several common complexion issues, such as:

  • Rosacea
  • Sun damage
  • Brown spots (hyperpigmentation)
  • Rough texture
  • Wrinkles
  • Visible pores
  • Redness
  • Freckles
  • Sun and age spots
  • Spider veins

During your consultation, board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Jules Walters and his team may recommend additional treatments to help you achieve your goals, including laser skin resurfacing, HALO laser skin rejuvenation, MOXI laser treatment, and chemical peels.

Plan With Confidence

BBL Recovery

There’s little to no downtime after BBL.

You may notice some mild redness, sensitivity, or darkening of brown spots for a few days post-treatment—this is part of the skin’s natural renewal. We recommend wearing broad-spectrum SPF and avoiding direct sun exposure to maintain results and protect your skin.

Glow Now, Age Later

BBL Results

Many patients notice brighter, more even skin after their first treatment, with continued improvements over the following weeks. Pigmentation spots often flake off naturally. For long-term benefits, a series of 3–5 treatments is typical, with seasonal maintenance sessions helping to preserve results.

With consistent care, your skin not only looks better—it behaves younger.

Broadband Light BBL Frequently Asked Questions

While both treatments address the same concerns, BBL provides a better patient experience than IPL because treatments are:

  • Faster
  • More effective
  • More comfortable

BBL treatments have been found to affect the skin at a cellular level to reverse the aging process.

While you will likely have visible improvements after your first treatment, your complexion will look its best after multiple sessions. We suggest most patients plan on 3 to 6 sessions, each scheduled about a month apart.

BBL is safest for lighter to medium skin tones. Individuals with darker skin tones may be at a higher risk for pigmentation issues. We assess your skin in detail to determine eligibility.

The sensation is mild—patients describe it as a warm flick or snap. Most find it very tolerable, especially with the cooling gel and modern handpieces we use.

Yes. BBL pairs well with treatments like HALO®, Moxi®, or medical-grade facials. It can also be part of a broader skin maintenance plan.

There is no real downtime, but you may notice temporary redness or darkening of pigmentation. These effects fade quickly and can be easily covered with makeup if needed.

At our New Orleans plastic surgery practice and medspa, the cost of a BBL photorejuvenation treatment varies depending on the size and number of areas treated. We will provide you with a personalized estimate during your consultation.

BBL Photofacial machine

A BBL photofacial can be performed in one of our office’s minor procedure rooms in around 20 to 30 minutes. To prepare for the photofacial, your aesthetician will cleanse your skin before protecting your eyes with goggles. Most people do not need any topical numbing to undergo the treatment comfortably. While some patients may have mild discomfort, it’s usually easy to tolerate, given the quick treatment time.

Typically, no recovery period is required after a photofacial; however, you may experience some redness and inflammation in your complexion upon leaving our office. This will go away naturally in about a day and may be covered with cosmetics if you prefer. Excess pigmentation, such as sunspots, will initially darken (called peppering) and look similar to pepper or coffee grounds before sloughing off within the first week or so.

Our aestheticians will recommend an individualized skincare regimen to promote the best results. After 2 to 5 days, the irregularities under your skin will rise to the surface and start to flake away. You may notice your dark spots becoming darker before flaking off. It is critical to protect your skin with sunscreen at all times and not to pick at your skin while it heals.

Once you have achieved your ideal results, they will likely last for several months. Some people choose to schedule touch-up treatments once or twice a year to maintain their ideal texture and coloration.
